Our Health Services team provides free screenings for pregnant women and children 0-3 enrolled in the Early Head Start program at Root for Kids. We work with a variety of health providers in Washington County to offer the best care for the children and moms.

Children’s health is a critical factor in being school ready. Head Start ensures that all enrolled children have timely immunizations and screenings for basic health, hearing, vision, blood lead, hemoglobin, mental health and dental.

In accordance with Head Start Performance Standards children enrolled in Head Start are required to have well-child care. Family Support Specialist and Health Services are available to provide information and resources to assist families and connect them with medical services offered within the community.

Parents and early care and education staff cannot always tell when a child has trouble seeing. Our Health Services staff uses the Welch Allyn Spot Vision Screener which is an evidence-based vision screening.

Health Services Advisory Committee (HSAC)

All Head Start and Early Head Start programs are required to establish and maintain a Health Services Advisory Committee (HSAC) to support children’s healthy development. The HSAC is an advisory group usually composed of local health providers who represent a wide variety of local social services agencies. They may include pediatricians, nurses, nurse practitioners, dentists, nutritionists, and mental health providers. Head Start staff and parents also serve on the HSAC. Effective partnerships are key to the success of this approach. HSACs help programs to make decisions about health services and strengthen the communities where Head Start families live.
